Today has been a full day. We started the morning out by going to the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court building, and then a tour of the Capitol building. Inside the Capitol they have some really beautiful rooms with lots of statues. Our tour guide said they had about 150 statues throughout the building. We got to see the old rooms where the House and the Senate used to meet. It was about an hour tour. After the Capitol we went to three Smithsonians: Natural History, American History, and the National Air and Space museums. In the Natural History museum we saw displays of dinosaurs and gemstones. We were lucky to get into the American History museum because on September 5th they are closing it for two years to renovate the building. Some of our favorite things in the American History museum were Dorothy’s red shoes from Wizard of Oz, the war memorial, the flag that hung over the Pentagon after 9/11, and a sunstone from the original Nauvoo temple. In the Air and Space museum we found Russell L. Maughan’s “Dawn to Dusk” tribute. He is my grandma’s father who was the first person to fly across the US in one day. On the plaque, it states that on June 23, 1924, he flew 4296 kilometers (2670 miles) between New York and San Francisco in 21 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds. It was neat to see a little display for Grandma’s father in the Smithsonian. They had a picture of him as well as a little paragraph about what he did. After the museums we took the metro to Arlington Cemetery. We saw JFK’s gravesite and eternal flame, and we went to the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. It was neat seeing the soldier’s guard the tombs and walk back and forth. It was amazing to see how many tombs there were in the cemetery of those who served their country. In a brochure they said that on the average day they bury 24 people a day there. Once we got back to our hotel we went out to dinner at the same Mexican restaurant that we went to the other day. I really enjoyed my dinner tonight so I think we will go back again tomorrow. It sure beats McDonalds!
