Today was our last full day of vacation. We were able to finish seeing everything we wanted to with plenty of time to spare. This morning we went to Ford’s theater to see where Lincoln was shot and then across the street to the house where he passed away. It was really cool to hear how the events unfolded that evening and to see were he was sitting in the theater. In the side balcony where he was sitting they had American flags and a picture of George Washington in the middle, exactly how it was that evening. They said the shooter, John Wilkes Booth, tripped on one of the flags after he shot Lincoln, causing him to fall over the balcony onto the stage. He was able to escape out one of the side doors on the stage before anyone really knew what was happening. He shot President Lincoln during one of the really funny scenes, so while everyone was laughing, no one heard the shot and some of the audience thought it was part of the scene. It was interesting to hear it and be there in person. After that we saw the Navy memorial, which was neat because they had a water fountain which had blue water coming out. We went across the way to the FBI building and took a picture but we were not able to go in because it was closed. We went in the National Archives and saw the original Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. All of the documents were in pretty bad shape: you couldn’t see their signatures and the writing was faded but it was still in one piece. After that we went to the White House, but we were not able to get in. You have to stand behind a fence that is pretty far from it so you don’t get that great of a view, but it is better then nothing. In order to get a tour of the White House these days you have to go through your Congressman and they do a background check. Unfortunately, we were unaware of this so we were out of luck. Most people are not able to go anymore because the security is so tight. We have noticed this at every place that we have gone. The security these days is so high and the security guards are so much meaner. I think they need to have high security but they can do it with a nicer attitude. I am sure they encounter a lot of people that make their job harder but there is no need to be mean. I was surprised today when we went to the Pentagon and we were not even allowed to take a picture of the building from the outside. Of course, we were not allowed in and the security is crazy. One of the guards had a machine gun and he was rude. Since the man was mean when Jared asked him a question I took a picture just because he said we couldn’t – it was dumb that we couldn’t take a picture of a building from the outside. I showed him…just kidding. I just had to do it but I did it from the bus so I was a good citizen. You know people take pictures all the time so I did because who knows when we will be back. Well, enough on mean security men. After the White House we went to the Vietnam and Korean war memorials. They had statues of soldiers and the faces of the soldiers were cool because I think it depicted how their faces probably were most of the time. They were anywhere from brave, sad, or worried. We then took the metro to Union Station, which is so large. They had so many shops and tons of restaurants and lots of options at the food court. Our last stop of the day was the Pentagon. The one thing we were able to see was a memorial they had for those who passed away on September 11th. It is neat how they have so many memorials for those who have served the country. We really feel we have seen everything we wanted to, so we went back to the hotel early and relaxed. This has been a great vacation that we will always remember.
